When basic needs are not being met, we may seek other ways to fulfill unconscious expectations.  Addiction or dependence may have started as a means to overcome shyness, stress, loneliness or through feeling unchallenged in life.

Addiction may seem to provide relief from anxiety, unresolved issues within relationships or low self-esteem. Often, an addiction just becomes an unhealthy habit.

Whatever the underlying cause, it is important to remember that addiction is a symptom of other issues and is used as a way to cope with yourself and the world around you.  Addiction can be outgrown and is not part of your identity.

By the way, there is little evidence to support a genetic element.

"I've had a drink, it was my husband's birthday, but I'm in control not the bottle."

How can Hypnotherapy help?

Picture
Any addiction hypnotises people into the present moment.  The expectation trance can cause a person to become locked into a set expectation of what he or she will get from the activity or substance, with the trance of addiction becoming habitual and central to lifestyle.

Hypnosis is a safe, naturally occurring trance state that can hook a person out of harmful habits by using the observing self and rehearsing the client for a future without the addictive trance.
